Port of Gothenburg ro-ro traffic up 3 per cent to 279,000 units in H1 2016

There has been a sharp rise in the number of cars exported and imported via the Port of Gothenburg. From January to June, 121,000 cars were handled, up 29 per cent on the same period last year. Ro-ro volumes have also risen, although container freight is down slightly.

With Volvo as a neighbour, the Port of Gothenburg has a natural role to play as the largest vehicle shipping port in Sweden. There are also significant imports of other brands. During the first six months of the year, 121,000 cars passed through the Port of Gothenburg, an increase of 29 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Ro-ro traffic, using trailers and trucks, was up 3 per cent during the first half of the year to 279,000 units.

The Port of Gothenburg is the largest container port in Sweden, handling almost 60 per cent of container imports and exports. During the first half of the year, more than 400,000 containers (TEU) were handled, down three per cent on the same period last year.

Passenger traffic has also fallen. A total of 690,900 passengers travelled to Gothenburg by ferry or cruise ship, a decrease of 10 per cent compared with January-June last year.

The Energy Port in Gothenburg is the largest public energy port in Sweden and is vital to the country’s energy supplies. By mid-year, oil and energy products had risen by 15 per cent to 11.2 million tonnes compared with 9.7 million tonnes the year before. The increase can be attributed mainly to the growth in volumes at the refineries and storage companies.
