Sevmash shipyard lays down the Knyaz Pozharsky, nuclear submarine of Borei-A-class (photo)

On 23 December 2016, Sevmash JSC (United Shipbuilding Corporation) held a keel-laying ceremony for the Borei-A-class nuclear submarine Knyaz Pozharsky.  The event was timed to coincide with the celebrations of the shipyard’s 77th anniversary (official date of foundation – December 21, 1939). 

The ceremony was attended by the representatives of RF Navy, Military and Industry Commission, State Duma, United Shipbuilding Corporation, JSC Sevmash, JSC Rubin Central Design Bureau, Arkhangelsk Region Government. 
 
Knyaz Pozharsky is the 8th nuclear-powered submarine (the last in the series of Borei-class submarines) and the 5th in the series of Borei-A-class nuclear missile submarines. The submarines are designed by JSC Rubin Central Design Bureau (Saint-Petersburg).  

“We are not going to stop with it, of course, – said Deputy Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy Viktor Bursuk. – CDB Rubin is working on a new missile carrier ordered by RF Navy and to be built by Sevmash

The Borei and Borei-A classes of fourth generation nuclear missile submarines, equipped with Bulava system ballistic missiles, were presumed to become the basis of the Russian Naval Strategic Nuclear Forces for the nearest decades.  Three Borei-class submarines, Yury Dolgoruky, Aleksandr Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh have already been delivered to RF Navy and are on duty under the Navy programme. Knyaz Vladimir, lead sum of Borei-A-class was laid down by Sevmash in 2012. Three Borei-A-class nuclear missile submarines, Knyaz Oleg, Generalissimus Suvorov and Imperator Aleksandr III are under construction at the “Sevmash” shipyard.
