Metrans puts a second shunting locomotive into operation at the Port of Hamburg

HHLA rail subsidiary Metrans has put a second shunting locomotive into operation at the Port of Hamburg. The new locomotive is powered by environmentally friendly hybrid technology and was christened “Prague” after the city in which Metrans was founded. “Prague” is Metrans’ fifth shunting locomotive, which it uses to handle with the growing shunting volumes at Europe’s largest rail port, the company said in its press release.

The Prima H3 locomotive from Alstom produces up to 50 percent less CO2 than conventional shunting locomotives thanks to its hybrid engine. It even cuts emissions of other harmful substances such as nitrogen dioxide by up to 70 percent. Depending on the assignment, the shunting locomotive can run on battery power for between 50 and 70 percent of the time it is in operation. This reduces fuel consumption by up to 50 percent.
