The application of the Russian Federation to expand the Arctic shelf submitted to UN Commission in 2015 (the revised version) will not be changed despite overlapping of the Denmark’s application, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Sergei Donskoi, Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, as saying on 30 March 2017, at the briefing in the framework of the IV International Arctic Forum ‘Arctic – Territory of Dialogue’ in Arkhangelsk.
Sergei Donskoi reminded that Russia first filed an application with the UN to expand the borders of its continental shelf in the Arctic in 2001. Then, according to the decision of the UN Commission, the application was revised and the new version was submitted in 2015. The revised application is under consideration of UN.
According to Sergei Donskoi, the application of Denmark which also claims the Lomonosov Ridge was filed later.
“It is also overlapping the borders of other Arctic states, which have not applied yet, - added the Minister. – We think the negotiation process can be launched today with the materials and applications submitted to UN. This process has already been started by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of our countries.”
“We will not change our application!”, emphasized Sergei Donskoi.
