Arctia’s icebreaker Kontio returns from icebreaking (photo)
Arctia says its icebreaker Kontio returned to Katajanokka, Helsinki, on Tuesday 2 May 2017. IB Kontio began in icebreaking duty on 16 December 2016. During this period it assisted 290 vessels and towed 82.
”This winter the situation was difficult in the Bothnian Bay, off the coast of Kemi, because of jammed brash barriers that formed early this winter. Also sequential storms and harsh winds made icebreaking challenging by piling ice masses and then forming ice ridges”, summs up Timo Jeskanen, Master of IB Kontio.
