Far East ports of Russia expected to transship some 200 mln t of cargo in 2017 – RF Transport Minister

According to preliminary estimations, annual throughput of seaports in the Far East of Russia is expected to make 200 mln t by the end of 2017, RF Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said yesterday, 6 September 2017, at the meeting of the State Council Presidium on comprehensive development of Far Eastern regions.

According to the press center of the Ministry, the capacity of the regional seaports in the beginning of the year exceeded 200 mln t, by the end of the year it is to be increased by 8 mln t. 

Last year, the ports handled about 186 mln t of cargo. 

Maxim Sokolov expects the demand for capacity expansion to grow in the future, especially when it comes to transshipment of coal which accounts for about 45% of the throughput. 

“In the first half of 2017, coal transshipment at the ports of the region grew by more than 8%. Amid the forecasts for further growth of APR countries’ demand for Russian coal, some investors have already embarked on implementation of projects for construction of large capacity coal terminals at the ports of Vanino, Vostochny, Nakhodka. The designs for Vladivostok and Shakhtersk terminals are ready. Next year will see the launching of a new coal terminal with the capacity of 18 mln t not far from Vladivostok, at Vostochny port”, said the Minister.
