During January–March, a total of 3.7 million tonnes of cargo was transported via the Port of Helsinki (+12.4%). Of this amount, 1.8 million tonnes was in import (+6.8%), and 1.9 million tonnes in export (+17.7%), the company said in its press release.
A total of 133,200 TEUs of goods were transported in containers, which was 11.8% more than the same time last year. In tonnes, the amount was 1.1 million (+13.9%). Especially the growth of export goods transported in containers has been spectacular (+26.1%). In part, this is probably due to Metsä Group starting their Äänekoski plant’s pulp export via Vuosaari Harbour in the autumn of 2017.
A total of 149,400 units (+8%) of rubber-wheeled traffic passed through the Port of Helsinki in January–March. In tonnes, the amount transported by heavy traffic was nearly 2.0 million (+7.1%).
Unitized cargo, i.e. cargo transported in sea containers, trucks and trailers, is the main cargo type at the Port of Helsinki.

Passenger traffic rates nearly as high as last year
The number of liner traffic passengers in Helsinki in January–March was 2.2 million. The rate was nearly as brisk as the same time last year (-0.7%).
– The small decrease in passenger traffic conforms to normal variations. Looks like the summer, on the other hand, is going to be busy; especially international cruise traffic appears to be breaking records, estimates CEO Ville Haapasaari.
