Port of Rotterdam organises information meeting about the replacement of Maaskade quay wall

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and contractor Hakkers B.V. will be organising an information meeting about the replacement of the quay wall on the Maaskade at Stichting Welzijn Mualla on the Noordereiland at 7.00 pm on Tuesday, 2 October 2018, the company said in its press release.

Around 40 metres of quay subsided on Maaskade in December 2015. Investigations revealed that, as the quay no longer meets current technical requirements, not only the section in which the subsidence occurred needs to be repaired. The original quay dates back to 1892.

During the information meeting on 2 October, residents, companies, inland shipping and other involved parties will be informed about the schedule, measures to minimise hindrance, implementation and communications regarding the construction works on the Maaskade. There will also be ample opportunity to pose questions.

Visitors to the information evening will also receive a detailed explanation about the preliminary assessment of buildings on the Maaskade. Hakkers and the Port Authority are doing everything possible to prevent damage to homes, buildings and the surroundings of the Maaskade. Buildings on the Maaskade will be assessed structurally by a specialised agency prior to the construction works. This entails the current status of the buildings being assessed, including any existing damage to the interior and exterior of the buildings. This preliminary assessment can be used to compare the situation before and after the construction works are carried out. And to determine whether any damage occurred as a result of the works. A further assessment will also be conducted after the construction works.

QuattroExpertise B.V. is responsible for these assessments. Residents of buildings on the Maaskade will receive a letter from this company in the near future, in which it further details the assessment process and informs residents about making an appointment.

In August, the Port of Rotterdam Authority selected contractor Hakkers B.V. to replace approximately 500 metres of quay wall on the Maaskade. Hakkers has extensive experience in realising hydraulic engineering projects in inner city areas. The Port Authority and Hakkers consider it important that involved parties are informed in time about the schedule, preparations and implementation of the construction works on the Maaskade.
