USC to master construction of ships powered by alternative energy

United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) sees alternative energy development as promising for the shipping industry, USC President Aleksey Rakhmanov told journalists.

According to him, the Corporation is going to finance the creation of a prototype ship powered by wind energy. Besides, USC is to master construction of ships running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) – from small-size ships to 40MW icebreakers as well as vessels on lithium-ion batteries.

Aleksey Rakhmanov emphasized that the mentioned technologies are to be mastered in the nearest 3-4 years.

United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC OJSC) is the largest shipbuilding company in Russia. It was set up in 2007 with 100% federal ownership. The holding comprises 40 companies and organizations (major shipbuilding and shiprepairing companies as well as leading design bureaus). Currently, USC consolidates the bulk of the domestic shipbuilding complex. The Russian market is the main focus of the state corporation though it also exports its products to 20 countries worldwide.
