Fujian port capacity to reach 12m TEU by 2010
THE container handling capacity of ports in China's Fujian province is expected to rise to an aggregate 12 million TEU by the end of the decade.
The province's cargo capacity, meanwhile, is forecast to reach 300 million tons, Xinhua reports.
Authorities in the province aim to raise the capacity of both Xiamen and Fuzhou ports alone to 100 million tons of cargo each.
This comes amid plans to invest heavily in the province's ports between now and the end of the decade, with authorities setting aside a total of CNY29.7 billion (US$3.75 billion) to build 156 new berths in the province.
The objective is to create five port clusters based along Fujian's coastline. By 2010, the Chinese government envisions that the ports of Xiamen and Fuzhou will form the centre of the port cluster, supported by the Fujian ports of Quanzhou, Putian and Zhangzhou.
