China's fifth bonded port area on Meishan Island starts construction

China's fifth bonded port area after Shanghai's Yangshan, Tianjin's Dongjiang, Dalian's Dayaowan and Hainan's Yangpu, is the Meishan Bonded Port Area in Ningbo, which has started construction, Xinhua reported.
Construction starts from building a 2,200-metre bridge from the Meishan Island, the site of the new bonded port, to the mainland. Two 100,000-ton container terminals with an annual capacity of 1.4 million TEU are also being built and will be completed by 2010.
The Meishan Island has a land area of 27 square kilometres and a coastline of 22.5 kilometres, which is able to berth fifth-generation oil carriers and six-generation containerships, said Chen Lixing, a senior official in charge of the Meishan Bonded Port Area. The bonded port area will cover 7.7 square kilometres.
The Meishan Bonded Port Area was approved by Beijing earlier in February to set up.
The port of Ningbo handled 9.35 million TEU in 2007, with an overall cargo tonnage of 345 million tons, making it the world's fourth largest port in terms of tonnage and the 11th largest in terms of container volume.
