On Monday, 23, sail training ship Mir of the State Maritime Academy, left for a 5-month voyage, the Academy’s press center reports. According to the source, 96 academy students will receive both theoretical and practical training onboard the ship. The best students were selected and this is their first voyage on the open sea.
At night from June 20 to June 21, sail training ship Mir participated in the Scarlet Sails festival arranged for school graduates. It was difficult for the Mir to pass the bridges of St. Petersburg because of the ship’s height and draft so the operation was arranged by Port Fleet CJSC as it has experience in unique operations.
The Mir is to visit 20 ports of six European states: Germany, Norway, Netherlands, France, Great Britain and Portugal. The crew is to participate in THE TALL SHIPS’ RACES 2008 and FUNCHAL 500 TALL SHIPS’ REGATTA arranged by Sail Training International - STI. It has become a tradition to exchange students within the framework of such races, which contributes to international communication between young people and to training of Russian students to work in multinational crews.
