Chile ports restore capacity after earthquake

Much of Chile’s port and terminal capacity is back in operation following Saturday’s earthquake, according to Hamburg Sud, one of the larger carriers serving the country.
The northern ports of Iquique, Antofagasta and Port Angamos are fully operational, Hamburg Sud said in a report.
The TPSV terminal where Hamburg Sud calls in the Port of Valparaiso is 90 percent operational. Several older berths at the port can not be used due to structural damage. TPSV will temporarily suspend its assigned berthing windows and vessels will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Dock structures at the Port of San Antonio have not been damaged and will be put back into service when power is restored to the facility.
No official information is available on the ports of San Vicente and Lirquen. Unconfirmed reports indicate marine terminals experienced some damage. Equipment is operational subject to a technical review although there are reports of flooding in the terminal yards.
There may be a temporary dip in fresh produce imports from Chile, but overall supplies are not likely to be affected by the earthquake, according to Nancy Tucker, vice president for global business development at the Produce Marketing Association.
Tucker said this is the peak season for Chilean produce. The earthquake shook some fruit from trees, but the harvest is not a total loss. Overall yields may be down, but it will require experts in the field to assess the damage, Tucker said.
There was about a 10-day supply of produce on the water when the earthquake struck, Tucker said. There was a dip in exports in the first three days afterward, and with ports returning to service supplies should pick up.
The earthquake is not likely to have a serious effect on retail prices for Chilean produce, Tucker said. Shoppers will see “normal” prices, but should not expect any specials or sale prices.
