St. Petersburg to order a small ice-class ship to clear the city’s waters

St. Petersburg Administration has planned for the next year bidding for contract for a small-sized ice-class boat to clear from the ice waters of rivers and canals in the city. The projected vessel should have overall dimensions allowing it to pass under the city’s numerous bridges, Dmitry Golubev, chairman of the Committee on the Environment, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety of St. Petersburg Administration said in an interview with journalists.

Earlier, Almaz Shipyard OJSC had delivered Nevsky Zastava (Gate) icebreaker built under the state 387-m-ruble contract to St. Petersburg. The ship was designed to remove thick ice and oil spills on the Neva River. The icebreaker is able to pass through the 1m-thick ice. The ship has its main power engines of 4900 hp.
