According to the State Seismological Bureau of China, quakes were recorded in 07:49 a.m. (03:49 MT). The epicenter was at a depth of 33 km in the Yuyshu county of Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in the southern Qinghai Province.
Chinese news agency "Zhongguo sinven" reports 90% of buildings destroyed in Yuyshu, cellular communication disrupted and electricity cut. The people were mostly in their single-story wood and clay houses as the quake came.
Qinghai Province, which borders the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, is considered a relatively sparsely populated. According to 2008 data, there were 5.54 million inhabitants in the province. The county Yuyshu is inhabited by 67.000, living in an urban settlement and 8 villages.
There were two consecutive 4.8-magnitude quakes a few hours before the major earthquake occurred.
A 8-magnitude earthquake, the strongest over the past few decades in China, had hit Sichuan province in May 2008, killing over 87.000 people.
