In January-March 2010, general cargo flows via Latvian ports rose by 30% as compared with Q1, 2009, to 2.34 million tons. Riga Free Port posted a 52.1-percent growth in general cargo volumes, the largest increase in the country’s seaports for Q1,10.
Container throughput grew by 11.3% to 51.440 TEUs. The Latvian seaports shipped 1.16 million tons of timber, a 69.2% rise, of metals and scrap metal – 125.900 tons, down 5.0% from Q1, 09.
There was a slight 1.4% drop in bulked cargoes, at 7.32 million tons, due to a 26.0-percent cut in coal volumes, to 3.95 million tons. Volumes of mineral fertilizers reached 877.000 tons, showing a 30.1% gain. There was a 19.3-percent cutback (5.96m tons) in volumes of liquid cargoes handled in the reporting period, including 5.6 million tons of petroleum products (-16.0%) and crude oil – 113.7 thousand tons (-75 , 8%).
Port of Riga has seen this Jan.-Mar. 7.14 million tons of cargoes (-4,2%). General cargo volumes reached 1.31 million tons, showing a 52.1% year-on-year surge. The Port handled 51.440 TEUs of containers (+11.9). Riga posted a 111.2% jump in timber volumes over the past year’ period, at 620.300 tons. Ro-ro cargoes fell 8.7% to 118.900 tons.
Port of Ventspils transshipped 7.21 million tons (-8.1%), including bulk cargoes - 2.65 million tons (+37.1%). There was a 26.3-percent cutback in liquid cargoes, at 4.10 million tons, largely petroleum products - 3.81 million tons (-22.3%), crude oil 80.100 tons, showing a 81.9% slump. General cargo volumes passing via Ventspils reached 456.000 tons, a 32.4% gain, thanks to 54.4-percent rise in Ro-ro cargoes, 315.000 tons and 131.400 tons of timber (+29.5 %). The Port did not handle containers this Q1.
An earlier report said the port of Liepaja had posted a 3.3-percent rise in Q1, 2010 to 1.01 million tons.
