Volga-Baltic Canal opens for ship transits

Volga-Baltic Canal has been open for ship transits since early today, PortNews IAA reports. As Vladimir Nikolayev, Chief of Volga-Balt State River Basin Department (SBD) said yesterday the navigation start date was in compliance with the inland waterways navigation schedule, approved by the Federal Agency of Maritime and River Transport of the Russian Ministry of Transport. There might be some temporary difficulties in transits on Lake Onega and White Lake routes associated with weather conditions, Mr. Nikolayev said.

Freight traffics on the Neva River started on April 26th, the Svir River has been open since April 27th, the Sheksna River – from April 28th. Today the SBD begins the lockage operations.

Icebreaking services of 2009-2010 navigation in the approach fairways to the Russian ports of the eastern Gulf of Finland (The Port of St. Petersburg, Ust-Luga, Vyborg, Vysotsk) had been announced over since midnight April 30.
