Yuzhny Port’s throughput up 0.77% in Jan-Nov to 16,4m tons

Freight traffic through Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port (Odessa region, Ukraine) for 11 months of this year increased by 125, 400 tons or 0.77% as compared with the same period of 2009 to 16,405,900 tons, the Yuzhny Port Authority press release said. In January-November the port handled 668 merchant ships.

In November, cargo turnover of the Port of Yuzhny rose by 6.5% (vs Nov, 2009) to 1,559,900 tons. More than 40% of the monthly volume was ore cargo. During the month the port handled 77 ships and 14,690 gondolas.

State-run Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port founded in 1978 is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, in the ice-free Small Adzhalyksk (Grygoryivsky) estuary, 30 km northeast of Odessa. The Port is connected to the sea by a 3km-long 14-m-deep canal so pilotage service is required for inbound and outbound vessels. Last year the Port’s throughput shrank by 17.79% y-o-y to 17.838 million tons.
