Drilling rig "Polar Star" to start operating on the Russian shelf, Gazflot says

Semi-submersible drilling rig Polyarnaya Zvezda (Polar Star), which was built at Vyborg Shipyard jointly with South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industry, was completed on time and is ready to start operating on the shelf of the Russian Federation, said Gazflot CEO Yuri Shamalov (the customer) at an official naming ceremony, the shipbuilding company’s press service reported.

General Director of JSC Vyborg Shipyard Valery Levchenko said in his turn that the 4rth generation drilling rig VI was built in less than 3 years.

In summer 2007, Vyborg Shipyard won the Gazprom contract worth 58bn rubles for the design and construction of two offshore drilling rigs to be operated on Shtokman gas condensate field.  Construction of the platforms began in July 2008. In early July 2009, the shipyard launched the first offshore drilling platform "Polar Star".

Completion of the second rig is scheduled for March 2011. In January 2010, Vyborg Shipyard and Samsung Heavy Industry entered into agreement on testing of mooring equipment of the upper structure of the Polar Star at the S.Korean shipbuilding company. Specialists of Gazflot will participate in the tests of the facility.

Vyborg Shipyard is focused on construction of drilling platforms for the development of marine offshore deposits and building of small and medium tonnage vessels. The enterprise also is the investor of a Primorsk-based new shipyard (Leningrad region) capable of building large-capacity merchant vessels.
