Marseilles to help fund major road to Fos

Marseilles Port Authority has agreed to help fund major road roadworks north of its container port, Fos, to improve access to the terminal.
As part of the project, which is scheduled for completion by 2015, the port will contribute €9 million (US$11.9m) towards the €50 million cost of a diversion around the town of Miamas, with a new dual-carriageway section of the RN569 trunk road.
The rest of the funding is expected to be provided by local, regional and national government.
Marseilles Fos reported an 8% increase in cargo throughput for the first half of the year, to 44.6 million tonnes. Container traffic increased 17% on the same period in 2009, to 510,819teu, on track to pass the million teu figure for the year.
Volumes at the Fos terminal increased 12% to 375,203teu from the strength of its deepsea trades. Intra-Mediterranean traffic rose by 36% to 135,616teu. General cargo traffic rose 18% to 8.3 million tonnes, with ro-ro volumes up 5% at 2.1 million tonnes.
