As part of the project, which is scheduled for completion by 2015, the port will contribute €9 million (US$11.9m) towards the €50 million cost of a diversion around the town of Miamas, with a new dual-carriageway section of the RN569 trunk road.
The rest of the funding is expected to be provided by local, regional and national government.
Marseilles Fos reported an 8% increase in cargo throughput for the first half of the year, to 44.6 million tonnes. Container traffic increased 17% on the same period in 2009, to 510,819teu, on track to pass the million teu figure for the year.
Volumes at the Fos terminal increased 12% to 375,203teu from the strength of its deepsea trades. Intra-Mediterranean traffic rose by 36% to 135,616teu. General cargo traffic rose 18% to 8.3 million tonnes, with ro-ro volumes up 5% at 2.1 million tonnes.
