Ukraine ports’ 11-month container traffic up 26.9% to 595,197 TEUs

Container throughput of Ukrainian ports in Jan-Nov, 2010 increased by 26.9% compared with the same period of 2009 to 595,197 TEUs, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine (formerly the Ministry of Transport) statistics said.

The 11-month growth was fueled by the port of Odessa’s 37-percent gain in container volume to 316,345 TEUs, Mariupol port’s 38% throughput increase to 5,674 TEUs and Ilyichevsk port’s 273,698 TEUs (+16%).

In November, Ukrainian ports demonstrated a 27-percent rise in handling containerized cargo.

Earlier, the Ministry drafted amendments to the regulations, reducing to 4 hours the time for handling one container at the ports. Besides, the Ministry, to boost container traffic, introduced a 50-percent discount on transshipment of containers.

The taken measures, the Ministry says, have ensured steady increase in container handling in the last 4 months.
