Oulu Port’s cargo handling grows by 12.5% in Jan-Nov to 3,25m tons

Freight traffic volume handled at the port of Oulu (Finland) for the 11-month period of 2010 rose by 12.5% from the same period of 2009 to 3,253,052 tons, edging the record high of 2008, PortNews reports citing the Oulu Port Authority.
 
In the reporting period, imports handling growth was fueled by a 172-percent jump in transshipment of kaolin, liquid chemicals (+45.3%), and exports of timber surged by 170.2%, cellulose – by 130% and shipment of paper rose by 3.7%.

Container throughput of Oulu Port in January-November rose to 28,244 TEUs (+1.8%) and 14,865SECUs (Stora Enso Cargo Unit). Handling of trailers increased by 42.1% to 1,845 units.
The Port of Oulu (Oulun Satama) a leading port for forest industry products and unitized cargo on the Gulf of Bothnia. The Oulu’s berths are located in Oritkari, Nuottasaari, Vihreäsaari and Toppila that see over 3 million tons of cargo and 500 - 600 ship calls annually. Paper and timber are the main export cargos. Imports flows passing via Oulu port include petroleum products and raw materials for the local timber industry.
