The Hong Kong-based shipping line is also postponing the return of some charter ships to shipowners to avoid adding new vessels in traditionally quieter parts of the year, he said.
The four ships will be delivered in 2013 after delays of as much as two quarters, the shipping line said in a statement Tuesday.
OOCL is buying the vessels, each able to carry about 8,600 containers, from China Shipbuilding Trading Co. and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.
