Grimaldi launches Marseilles-West Africa service

Leading car carrier and ro-ro owner Grimaldi Group of Italy has launched its first service at the Marseilles eastern harbour – the multi-purpose Mediterranean Express direct link to West Africa, the Marseilles Port Authority press release said.
The company, which already operates a car carrier service at Fos, is in a space-sharing collaboration with Navitrans for the new con-ro and conventional service. The 18-day rotation also includes Salerno, Genoa, Valencia, Dakar (Senegal), Lome (Togo), Lagos (Nigeria) and Cotonou (Benin).
Grimaldi’s Thebeland is currently operating the service alongside the Navitrans vessel Medcoa Lome but will be replaced early next year by the 216m long Repubblica di Roma. The replacement ship has a 650-TEU capacity, 2,200 lane meters of Ro-Ro space and two onboard cranes.
Grimaldi is the second new owner at the Marseilles eastern docks this year following the July arrival of UN RO-RO with the port’s first ro-ro link to Turkey.
