Indian government invites bids for Vizhinjam port

The Indian government has invited requests for qualification bids from 31 companies that had previously expressed interests in operating Vizhinjam Port, Business Standard has reported.
Interested companies include the Shipping Corporation of India, Essar shipping, Mundra Port, and the Port of Barcelona.
Companies operating ports in Amsterdam, Macau, Marseille, and Lisbon have also shown interest.
According to Business Standard, container volume at Vizhinjam Port is expected to reach 822, 000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by the end of Phase 1 in 2020.
Container volume by the end of phase 2 in 2030 is expected to reach 1.76 million TEUs and 2.82 million TEUs by the end of Phase 3 in 2044.
ompanies that have placed their bids will be shortlisted in the middle of January, 2011. Operations at the port is expected to start by the end of 2014.
