Port of Ventspils’ cargo throughput is down 6.8% in Jan-Nov to 22,8m tons

The volume of freight handled at Ventspils Free Port (Latvia) in January-November 2010 decreased by 6.8%, as compared with the 11-month period of 2009, to 22,811,000 tons, the Port Authority press release said.

Freight flows passing via the port in the reporting period included liquid bulk cargo – 55.15%, dry cargo - 35.76% and 8.09% of general cargoes.

Ventspils Free Port is located near the mouth of the river Venta. The port specializes in handling petroleum products, liquid chemicals, fertilizers, metals, cargos of timber and fishing industries, coal, containers and Ro-Ro trailers. Dredging of the harbor increased depths of the port’s berths to 17.5 m to accommodate the largest vessels entering the Baltic Sea. Liquid cargo terminal comprises 9 berths with depths ranging from 11,5 to 17,5 meters. In 2009, the port handled 26,640,000 tons of cargo.
