A total of 505 loaded containers and 159 empties were discharged and 358 containers were loaded on the 2,546teu capacity vessel, part of the six-vessel CSAV Marco Polo Service string running between the east coast of South America, Africa, the Middle East and Indian Sub-continent.
APM Terminals Itajai’s MD, Walter Joos, said: “This is a very important milestone for us, and we are very appreciative of the tremendous effort made by the Itajai Port Authority and the government of Brazil.”
Following the complete reconstruction of the 273-metre berth, APM Terminals Itajai resumed control of the facility on 13 September from the Italai Port Authority in a ceremony attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In 2008, Itajai was Brazil’s second-largest container port, after Santos, with throughput of nearly 700,000teu. However, it fell to fourth place in 2009.
Overall container volumes at Itajai during the first half of 2010 were up by nearly 80% on last year, to 424,000teu, raising the port’s ranking among Latin American ports to 11th from 19th in the same period last year.
