CMA CGM announces port surcharge in Sydney

CMA CGM Group has decided to implement an Emergency Port Congestion Surcharge (PCS) in the port of Sydney for CMA CGM services to and from Europe.

“Operational situation at Sydney Port Botany has worsened over the last month and constant delays penalise CMA CGM vessels with additional over-consumption to ensure schedule integrity,” said CMA CGM in a statement.

The charges for exports and import from/to Sydney will incur and extra US$82 per TEU. The surcharge will be effective on January 15, 2011.

The surcharge is indicative of a spate of problems experienced at the port. In early November, Shipping Australia (SAL) questioned why a new computer system was introduced during the peak season for containers being imported through Sydney, which contributed to congestion.
