According to an overview by Lloyd’s List, total box handling at the port will reach approximately 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at year-end.
According to port operator Duisport, this represents a 25% increase over 2009.
Box handling remained stable during the economic downturn, with the operator stating that this had a lot to do with the two dedicated terminals for container lines NYK and CMA CGM.
Duisport chief executive Erich Staake was reported to have said that the positive results encouraged the company to further expand capacity and facilities for container handling.
Total cargo turnover from ships and trains is reported to have reached approximately 28 million tonnes, up from 22.8 million tonnes recorded over the same period last year.
This 2010 result has almost eclipsed the port’s record year in 2008, when it handled 28.3 million tonnes of cargo.
There were also decreases in certain commodities handling, with steel handling still well below pre-economic crisis levels.
Mineral oils and chemical products saw marked growth on the handling and throughput side, with Duisport authorities forecasting double-digit growth in 2010.
