FPR’s cargo throughput to hit record high, year-end forecast

Freight traffic volume via Free Port of Riga (Latvia) may exceed this year-end 30 million tons, a record volume ever handled by the port, the Port Authority statement said.

Free Port of Riga Board's Chairman Andris Ameriks said the 30m-ton volume was the result of a long work of the authority to increase traffic volume. In 2010 the port channeled to the budget of Latvia LVL300 million (the country’s economy is reported to receive LVL 10 from each ton handled at the port).

The port of Riga has reported a 0.3-percent gain in January-October to 25 million tons of cargo.

Free Port of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), the total area of the port – 6.348 ha, length of berths – 13.818 m, maximum draft of vessels at berth – 12.2 m. Transit cargoes make up 80% of overall freight traffic, carried to / from the CIS countries. In 2009 the Port of Riga posted a 0.5-percent gain in freight volumes, to 29.72 million tons.
