Klaipeda Port’s cargo volume is up 22% in Q1 to 9 million tons

Freight traffic passing through Port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) in the first quarter of this year rose by 22.1% from last year’s figures, to 9,04 million tons, the Lithuania Transport Ministry said citing the Klaipeda Port Authority statistical data.

In March, freight volume handled at the port grew by 13% to 2,94 million tons, including 146,200 tons of bulk cargo (+28.6%), 745,500 tons of liquid bulk (-11%) and 433,500 tons of rolling cargo (+16.9%). The port's monthly container volume surged by 60.3% to 38,116 TEUs.

State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. In 2010, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput increased year-over-year by 10.9%, to 31,27m tons.
