Primorsky Territory-based Port Vostochny was selected for the number of objective reasons, the report says. First, this is the deepest in the Far East and ice-free port. Second, the port has direct access to international transport corridors "TransSiberian" and "Primorye-1”. Besides, the port is not constrained by urban infrastructure. In the future, the port could become an international transportation hub.
Creation of SEZ in Port Vostochny is believed to encourage large-scale investments in the region, improve the attractiveness of the transport system of Russian Far East for trade and transit cargo, further development of the Trans-Siberian Railroad as the shortest route from Asia to Europe, said the regional administration. Additionally, the SEZ might play an important role in preparation for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit to be held in Vladivostok.
