Rotterdam coal imports fall by 8pct in Q1

Coal imports to Europe’s largest port of Rotterdam fell by 8.1% YoY in the first quarter of 2011, amid heightened demand for gas, Steelguru reports.

The port authority said that coal handling at the port totaled 5.8 million tones in the first three months of the year, against 6.3 million tonnes in January-March 2010, port data show.

The authority said that “Demand for coal for energy production is still under pressure from the low price of natural gas, but is recovering thanks to the reduction in the generation of nuclear power [in Germany].”

It added that “For the time being, the stocks at the terminals are being drawn on.”

Imports of iron ore, meanwhile, fell by 4% to 8.2m tonnes, amid high prices for the commodity. But total dry bulk imports rose by 4% to total 18.4m tonnes, on the back of increased agribulk and other dry bulk handling.

The port said that German coal handling rises Meanwhile, inland shipments of coal in Germany rose by 25% in 2010 to total 36 million tonnes.
