Transas says that from 2012 when the ECDIS carriage requirement enters force, on vessels fitted with ECDIS any officer with navigational responsibilities will need to hold certification to verify that they have conducted an approved STCW ECDIS course which meets the new standards as it is stated in the Manila Amendments. Generic and type specific training should be incorporated into a Company's SMS, conform to international standards and be accepted by Flag State.
Meanwhile, Transas has announced that two more companies have joined its Global ECDIS Training Network (GET-Net), namely Marstal Navigationsskole of Denmark and PT Promacindo, based in Indonesia.
Transas has supplied 35 sets of its ECDIS Computer Based Training course toNordic Tankers Marine, for use by its officers.
Transas ECDIS CBT is based on IMO Model Course 1.27 considering the requirements for ECDIS training in accordance with the Manila Amendments of STCW. The combination of theoretical and practice parts enables trainees to gain necessary knowledge about the system they operate. A trainee receives a certificate proving the successful completion of the CBT.
Nordic Tankers Marine has also participated in a Transas ‘Train-the-trainer’ course held by Capt Peter Müller in Mumbai, India during which eight trainers received Instructor certificates.
Hanus Mikkelsen, director marine HR Nordic Tankers Marine says: “Training is a key element in transition to ECDIS. All our officers attend a five day ECDIS generic training course ashore and now ECDIC CBT from Transas will be a perfect supplement to enhance the users’ knowledge and fulfill familiarization on type specific equipment required by PSC and ISM Code and, in the nearest future, also by some Flag States. We trust in Transas Marine solutions as they have highly qualified trainers, comprehensive training materials; and the courses are available in different locations around the world”.
