Port of Oulu cargo volume up 5.1% to 1,16 million tons

Cargo throughput of the port of Oulu (Finland) for 4 months of 2011 increased by 5.1% compared with January-April 2010, to 1,16 million tons, the Port Authority said. The volume of container traffic during the reporting period shrank by 0.8%, while  SECU container volume was up 22.8%.

Exports rose by 3.4%. There was also a significant increase in the segment of timber and liquid chemicals. The four-month volume of inbound cargo grew by 4.5% driven by a 174.9 percent surge in imported salt and carbonate (+24.2%).

The Port of Oulu (Oulun Satama) is one of the leading ports for forest industry products and unitized cargo on the Gulf of Bothnia. The harbors in Oritkari, Nuottasaari, Vihreäsaari and Toppila have 500 - 600 ship calls each year. The port specializes in handling exported paper and timber and imported petroleum products and raw materials for the local timber industry. In 2010, Oulu cargo throughput increased year-over-year by 13.7% to 3,55 million tons.
