IMF's Dominique Strauss-Kahn steps down over sex charges

Mr. Dominique Strauss-Kahn informed the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of his intention to resign as Managing Director with immediate effect, the IMF's press release said.

In a formal letter sent to the Board on Wednesday Mr. Strauss-Kahn stated he firmly denied all of the allegations made against him.

"I want to protect this institution which I have served with honor and devotion, and especially - especially - I want to devote all my strength, all my time, and all my energy to proving my innocence," Mr. Strauss-Kahn said.

Mr. John Lipsky remains Acting Managing Director, IMF said.
