Rosatom detects leaks source in the Taymyr icebreaker’s reactor room

The place of leaks in the reactor room of the nuclear-powered icebreaker Taymyr owned by Rosatom Corp. has been found, the Murmansk regional administration’s press office said quoting Vyacheslav Ruksha, Atomflot’s General Director who was reporting at a meeting of the Public Council for the safe use of nuclear energy in the Murmansk region. According Mr. Ruksha, the leakage was due to non-compactness of primary coolant circuit. A team of specialists has been investigating into the problem to assess the repair costs and time, he said.

Earlier Rosatom reported a minor radiation leak in reactor ventilation system while the icebreaker was staying in Yenisei Bay. Rosatom said there were no threats to people or environment.

Taymyr is a shallow-draft nuclear powered icebreaker, and the first of four similar vessels. She was built in 1989 for the Soviet Union in Finland by Wärtsilä at the Helsinki New Shipyard by order of the Murmansk Shipping Co. LOA - 151 m, breadth - 29 m, nuclear power plant - 50,000 shp.

FSUE Atomflot (Rosatomflot) is a member of state-controlled Rosatom Corporation. The company's fleet of icebreakers comprises 4 nuclear icebreakers with 75,000-shp dual-reactor plant, and 2 icebreakers with 40,000-shp single-reactor plant.
