MSC axes emergency bunker surcharge

The world’s second biggest shipping line, MSC, has axed its Emergency Bunker Surcharge (EBS), but has unveiled plans to increase rates on the Asia-Europe trade in July, ifw-net reports.

The Geneva-based deepsea carrier said that from 1 July it would implement a US$250 per teu General Rate Increase (GRI) for all cargo shipped on its Silk, Lion, Dragon and Tiger Services from Asia to North-West Europe, Scandinavia/Baltic, West Mediterranean, North Africa, Adriatic, Central East Mediterranean East Mediterranean and Black Sea destinations.

At the same time, it announced it would cancel a previously announced EBS of $200 per teu that it introduced on 15 May.

The news follows last week’s decision by Maersk Line to postpone implementation of a planned GRI for a month because it did not believe it would be a success.

The Danish carrier said it would delay its $500 per 40ft dry container increase it planned for 1 June until 1 July.

Other shipping lines have also announced plans to increase rates over the coming weeks.

Hanjin announced that, from 15 May, Far East (excluding Japan) to North Europe and Mediterranean services would rise by $200 per teu for dry, reefer and special shipments.

The Korea-based carrier said it would also impose a $150 per teu price hike on routes to North Europe and Mediterranean destinations from South-east Asia, the Indian sub-continent and Middle East.

It is not known how successful Hanjin’s attempts to increase prices have been.

OOCL also revealed plans to increase rates on westbound services from the Far East (excluding Japan), the Indian Sub-continent and the Middle East, to North Europe by US$275 per teu from next Wednesday.

All-in spot rates on the trade have tumbled from around $1,400 per teu at the start of the year to around $890 per teu today.
