MPT commissions breakwater mole berth

A breakwater mole berth has recently been commissioned at Mormugao Port. Reconstructed with a capital outlay of Rs 31 crore, the berth, with quay length of 270 m, is a multi-commodity facility which can handle passenger vessels and cargo on both the port and sea sides, Worldmaritimenews reported.

Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) had last fiscal joined a select club of ports handling annual throughput of more than 50 million tonnes. With the commissioning of the mole berth, MPT is confident of achieving the current fiscal’s target of 53 million tonnes fixed by the Ministry of Shipping.

With operations at Panaji port shutting down due to the impending monsoon, there have been demands from exporters to enhance facilities at Mormugao Port. They are happy that with the commissioning of the mole berth, the Port has increased its cargo-handling capacity during the monsoon as well.
