Cargo throughput at the terminals of the Port of Arkhangelsk in January-August of the year increased by 1.2% compared with the same period a year before, to 3,867,200 tonnes, the Port Authority told PortNews.
In August, freight movements statistics showed a 9.7% decline to 649,200 tonnes.
In the reporting period, exports increased by 30.5% to 2,732,500 tonnes. Oil product exports rose 44.1% to 1,997,000 tonnes and export coal shipments jumped 70.1%, to 410,400 tonnes. Timber exports fell by 23% to 247,000 tonnes.
Import flows (containers and other general cargo) passing through Arkhangelsk fell in the eight-month period by 29.8%, to 80.5 million tonnes.
Short sea traffic shrank by 34.7% to 1,054,200 tonnes, including inbound and outbound goods, by 32.6% (649,300t) and by 37.6% (404,900t), respectively.
The Port of Arkhangelsk is the largest port in the north of Russia, founded more than 400 years ago. The year-round navigable port is located in the delta of the Northern Dvina River flowing into the White Sea. Icebreakers operate and assist shipping in the port’s waters from December to mid-April. Port of Arkhangelsk is accessible to vessels with the following specifications: length – 175m, breadth – up to 30 m, and draft - up to 9.2 m. The port’s 151 berths has a total length of 17,548 meters, including 31 berths of timber industry operators, 22 berths of the sea commercial port, 6 berths of a river port, 3 berths operated by Rosneft, ArchangelskNefteProduct for export of oil and oil products, 2 berths of a fishing port and 87 minor berths of other entities. In 2012 cargo traffic at the port of Arkhangelsk totaled 5.58 million tonnes.
