Ports discuss green fees in Antwerp
On October 9-11, 200 participants from ports, shipping companies and authorities are brought together in Antwerp to discuss port related environmental issues at the annual Green Port Congress, said in the port's press release.
The conference is organized by, among others, European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO) and gathers delegates mainly from Europe but also from other parts of the world. From Ports of Stockholm Gun Rudeberg is involved, in the role of chairman of the ESPO's Sustainability Committee. She leads several of the workshops that are part of the conference.
At Gun Rudeberg's workshops discussions are held about ports' possibilities to, in various ways such as through financial incentives, encourage customers, suppliers and others to reduce their environmental impact. The participants are also discussing the possibility to "force" the improvement of the environment, for example by imposing requirements in contracts and agreements.
Since the 1990s, Ports of Stockholm have been working with environmentally differentiated port dues, which means that customers who have taken steps to reduce the environmental impact may receive reduced port charges.
