In January-September 2014, the Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 30,042,100 t of cargo (+13.8%, year-on-year). As IAA PortNews was informed by the port authority, coal transshipment climbed by 7.3% to 11,014,900 t, oil products – by 33.9% to 7,357,500 t, timber – by 3.1% to 1,606,200, while transshipment of wood pellets dropped by 44.7% to 392,900 t, scrap metal – up 17.3% to 910,000 t, ore – down 5.2% to 306,200 t.
The port’s container throughput increased by 1.7% to 287,933 TEUs. Passenger turnover fell by 6.6% to 620,312 persons including 59,520 cruise passengers (-9.1%).
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2013, the port’s throughput declined by 1.6%, year-on-year, to 35,466,700 t of cargo.
