On Sunday October 5th, the Emma Maersk sailed away from the port of Zeebrugge with a total tonnage of 15.500 TEU, which is the maximum amount of containers the ship was designed to carry, and also a record in Zeebrugge’s statistics, Port of Zeebrugge said in its press release.
The ship was stacked with 8 layers of containers in front of the ship’s bridge and 9 layers behind the bridge., the ship’s maximum capacity.
The Emma Maersk is a containership of the Danish shipping liner Maersk. Until November 2012, the ship and her 7 sister vessels were the largest containerships in the world.
This December, the port of Zeebrugge will receive the container carrier CSCL Globe. This China Shipping Container Lines vessel is foreseen to be delivered from the shipyard in November. With a maximum capacity of 19.100 TEU, this vessel is the next record holder in container capacity.
