On Saturday, the world's most demanding yacht race will begin in Alicante in Spain. The Port of Gothenburg is the official homecoming partner and port representatives will be at the starting line, the company said in its press release.
On Saturday, the Volvo Ocean Race will officially begin in the Spanish port of Alicante. The Swedish SCA team and the other six boats will set sail for Cape Town on the first leg of this nautical marathon. Magnus Kårestedt, Port of Gothenburg Chief Executive, will be in Alicante to see the start.
"The atmosphere in Alicante is electric. It is marvellous that the race will start from here as we have a number of direct links with Spanish ports and we are working together to switch more freight from road to sea," Magnus Kårestedt said.
Swedish exports to Spain are mainly in the form of steel, paper and sawn wood products and on the return journey the ships are loaded with food, wine, ceramics and tiles.
The Port of Gothenburg is the official homecoming partner for the Volvo Ocean Race.
Magnus Kårestedt continued: "It's a great pleasure to be part of this fantastic round-the-world race which is about to get under way. We want to showcase our role as the Port of Scandinavia to the world and also the fact that we are a modern, sustainable port."
The race will finish in Gothenburg on Sunday, June 21 although we will only know the overall winner a week later following the In-Port Race, which will take place at the entrance to the port.
