SISI: Global ports continue slow growth in Q3 2014

In the third quarter of this year average growth at global ports was barely above 3% in general, the Shanghai International Shipping Institute (SISI) report said.

The Global Port Development Report 2014 Q3 released recently shows that the ports worldwide saw a down curve every quarter since the beginning of the year and the number of ports with negative growth obviously increased, while the rest mostly increased less than 10%. The results are attributed to the less active economy and trade in the Eurasian region this quarter which further slowed the seaborne trade demand, and global port industry maintained a slow-paced development.

In 2014Q3, the manufacturing localization in the U.S. curbed the growth of international seaborne trade to some extent, recovery in the Euro zone remained slow but regional trade and consumption climbed a little and port production was looking up thanks to favorable monetary policies, whereas port growth in emerging economies stalled due to weaker investment and narrowing export demand, the report said.

As the effects of the new round of international trade agreements and the regional integration strategy haven’t shown yet, and because of geopolitical factors, global trade and port production will continue to grow at a low speed for a period to come.

Shanghai International Shipping Centre is an institution of research and consultation on international shipping industry development, providing decision-making, consultation and information service. The Global Port Development Report (Q3 2014) along with its English version has been released in Dec 2014 again by SISI, which is committed to analyze the development trends of global ports and looking forward to 2014 in several aspects, such as throughput, operating management, construction situation and technology application.
