Kalmar completes AGV automation project at PSA Singapore

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has successfully completed the project to supply the onboard navigation application for four automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to PSA Singapore. The initiative is part of PSA's strategic investment in automation technologies to enhance its premier status as the world's largest transhipment hub, the company said in its press release.

The project included the design of the AGVs' onboard navigation system, the navigation infrastructure and the deployment of Kalmar SmartFleet remote diagnostic tools. The installation and integration to vehicle systems were started in the autumn of 2013, and the navigation application was fully integrated with PSA Singapore's in-house systems by the end of 2014.

The software, originally developed by Kalmar for the AutoShuttleTM, is responsible for automatically controlling the AGVs, guiding the vehicles along their given routes and measuring accurately their positions using transponder navigation. The Kalmar SmartFleet diagnostics tools provide a remote view of the operation of the equipment, as well as storage and call-up of essential AGV alarms and machine signals for operator analysis.

Timo Alho, Director, Terminal Automation, Kalmar, said: "Terminal operators are increasingly specifying Kalmar automated solutions to boost port productivity and reduce overheads. We are delighted that our software was selected for this important project. The successful integration of Kalmar's navigation technologies to third party equipment proves that our automation solutions are indeed compatible with any equipment brand. This project was completed on time and in budget."
