A three-masted sailing training ship "MIR" of Rosmorport on July 15 moored in the port of Alesund, Norway. STS Mir will participate in one leg of The Tall Ships Races 2015, Rosmorport said in a press release.
The Tall Ships Races 2015 organized by Sail Training International has been held since 1956.
"The races route varies from year to year, so is quite difficult to predict in advance what will be the next leg, but at the same time, participants are given a unique opportunity to re-test their endurance, strength of mind and to gain experience. The regatta kicks off on July 18 in the port of Alesund, there are 56 tall sailing ships involved from more than thirty countries. The crew of STS "Mir" includes 137 cadets of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping," Rosmorport's press service quoted Andrei Tarasenko, General Director, FSUE Rosmorport as saying.
STS "Mir" will stay in Ålesund for three days and will be open for visitors. On July 18, the ship will leave the port and sail south to Kristiansand joining other participants on the so-called Cruise-in-Company leg. The ship will then take part in Race 2 from Kristiansand to Aalborg in Denmark.
STS Mir is a three-masted, full rigged training ship, based in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ship was built in 1987 at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland. General characteristics: LOA - 109.2 m, beam - 13.9 m, draft - 6.3 m, the main mast height is 52 m.
