Wärtsilä, the leading global supplier of flexible and efficient power plant solutions and services, signed a five-year maintenance agreement with Teck Alaska Incorporated (Teck) for their power plant at the Red Dog mine in Northwest Alaska. The agreement optimises the power plant’s lifetime and performance as well as reduces operating costs in a safe, reliable, and environmentally sustainable way. The power plant has eight Wärtsilä generator sets with a combined output of 42 MW, the Corporation said on Tuesday.
Red Dog, one of the world’s largest zinc mines, is committed to meeting the highest environmental standards. The mine has received ISO 14001:2004 certification which means that Red Dog’s environmental management system supports environmental protection and fosters improvements in environmental performance.
In 2010, Teck began mining the Aqqaluk deposit at Red Dog, which is expected to provide sufficient ore to enable operations to continue until 2031.
The broad range of services offered to Red Dog includes technical support services, fuel efficiency initiatives, training services, electrical and automation audits as well as spare parts and maintenance work for major overhauls.
