Chinese company to participate in construction of deepwater harbor at Arkhangelsk port (photo)

At the meeting with Acting Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Igor Orlov held on August 11, representatives of Poly Technologies Inc. (China) expressed their interest in construction of the deepwater harbor at Arkhangelsk seaport, press center of the regional government says.

“Belkomur project implying the construction of a new marine transport hub was initiated long time against. Today, we are nearing practical implementation of this ambitious project. I hope that our Chinese partners will evaluate the level and the scope of works required considering logistic and transport potential of a deepwater port”, Acting Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Igor Orlov said at the meeting with Chinese delegation.

“It is a promising project and we are interested in participation. Our company has both the financial possibilities and the experience of building port infrastructure in foreign countries”, said Sun Lin, head of the Chinese delegation, Vice Director General of Poly Technologies Inc.

Belkomur and deepwater harbor is among the priorities in the development of the Arkhangelsk region. Being a member of the state commission for Arctic development issues, Igor Orlov has frequently brought up the issue on the construction of a deepwater port in Arkhangelsk. Apon his recommendation, the regional government asked the Ministry of Transport include the new port project into the state programme “Social and Economic Development of Russia’s Arctic Zone through 2020”. 

The project provides for construction of new port infrastructure 55 km north of Arkhangelsk. The facility is to have annual capacity of up to 45 mln t. Deepwater harbor is to welcome large-capacity vessels with the deadweight of up to 100,000 t. The distance for transportation of cargoes from China to European is to be reduced by 40% as compared with the voyage via the Suez Canal.

The parties discussed the measures of further cooperation.
