Damen Shiprepair Harlingen acquires hall for multifunctional purposes
Damen Shiprepair Harlingen (DSHl), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, acquired a repair, blasting and paint hall from Strametco Vastgoed BV recently, the company said in its press release.
The hall is located on the DSHI yard premises and accessible via the yard's ship lift. With the acquisition, Damen ensures it can offer a covered repair facility in a market that increasingly demands it. In particular, parties like the Royal Netherlands Navy, Rederij Doeksen and Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten, which have frequently made use of the hall in the past, will benefit from having the facility remain accessible to them and all have responded positively.
Fishing vessel owners, traditionally a frequently returning market segment, have also reacted positively. Fisheries turnover has been rising steadily, and that will give more financial leeway for ship maintenance. A covered repair facility is therefore an attractive option, without being dependent on weather conditions, to complete maintenance work.
Activities in the hall will not be limited to repairs, blasting and painting. If necessary, the hall can also be used for conversions and damage repairs, for example. In the past this was often problematic, because the hall was owned by a dedicated painting company.
Damen Shiprepair Harlingen can now repair vessels up to 90 metres in the fully covered hall. The doors have, with a total width of 20 metres, the same size as the ship lift, while the height under the overhead cranes is over 34 meters.
At the rear, a separate hall has been built consisting of two parts. One part is designed as a blasting hall. From here, a dividing door leads to the spraying hall, where the blasted parts can be protected immediately. The blasting and spraying hall can treat both smaller parts of vessels, such as fishing vessel booms, blocks and hatches as well as structural components from external customers. Think of containers, agricultural equipment and trailer boats.
With the acquisition of the hall, Damen Holding confirms that the repair yard in Harlingen has a lot of potential and is prepared to invest in the future. The board in Harlingen is delighted with the developments. "The fact that Damen is willing to make investments in our yard is a vote of confidence and it motivates us even more to put the yard in Harlingen on the map. It is also good news for employees, suppliers and vendors," says General Manager Damen Shiprepair Harlingen Frank Seinen.
